The Reformed Faith and Arminianism

By John Murray
From a series which appeared in The Presbyterian Guardian in 1935-1936.

Arminianism derives its name from James Arminius, a minister of the Reformed Church in Holland who lived from 1560 to 1609. He became Professor of Divinity in the University of Leyden, in 1603. It was particularly during the period of his professorial activity at Leyden that he gave expression to the departures from the Reformed Faith that have ever since been associated with his name. Arminius died in 1609, but he left behind him disciples who continued to teach and develop his tenets.

In 1610 a document known as the "Remonstrance" and frequently spoken of as "The Five Arminian Articles" was signed by forty-six ministers and presented to the civil authorities of the United Provinces. These articles set forth the doctrine of the "Remonstrants" or Arminians, as they came to be called, on the subjects of predestination, the extent of the atonement, the cause of saving grace, and perseverance. These articles were both negative and positive - they denied one doctrine and affirmed another.

In the early stages of the controversy the precise hearings and implications of some of the points had not become explicit, but, as the conflict precipitated by the Remonstrants developed, it became evident that the five points of the Reformed Faith which the Arminians were particularly insistent upon denying were unconditional predestination, limited atonement, total depravity, irresistible grace, and the perseverance of the saints. These Calvinists affirmed, Arminians denied.

These five points do not define for us what the Reformed Faith or Calvinism is. The Reformed Faith is a system of truth and is much more comprehensive than any five points that might be enumerated, however important in it or essential to it these five points might be. In these five points attacked by the Arminians, however, the system of truth known as Calvinism may said to be crystallized. They express what this system is in opposition to the Arminian system or any other system that, in similar fashion, is opposed to it. They ever continue to be the decisive points at which conflict is joined with any system of thought that is moved by an Arminian bias and directed by the same underlying principles.

Neither are we to think that the error of Arminianism is confined to these five points. Arminianism is a theology and the difference between this theology and the theology of the Reformed Church comes to expression at many other points. The error of the Arminian theology is, however, summed up in these five points and so the greater part of the controversy in the past is quite justifiably found to concern the doctrines enunciated in them. What is true in reality has been demonstrated by history.

Unconditional Predestination

The first article of the Remonstrance of 1610 concerned predestination. All of the early Reformers were substantially at one on the doctrine of predestination. It is in the Reformed Church alone, however, that the doctrine of absolute predestination held by Luther as well as by Calvin continued to hold sway and came to its rights. What does it mean?

In answering we cannot do better than quote the Westminster Confession of Faith, chapter III:

"i. God from all eternity did, by the most wise and holy counsel of His own will, freely and unchangeably ordain whatsoever comes to pass: yet so, as thereby neither is God the author of sin, nor is violence offered to the will of the creatures, nor is the liberty or contingency of second causes taken away, but rather established.

"iii. By the decree of God, for the manifestation of His glory, some men and angels are predestinated unto everlasting life, and others foreordained to everlasting death.

"iv. These angels and men, thus predestinated and foreordained, are particularly and unchangeably designed; and their number is so certain and definite, that it cannot be either increased or diminished.

"v. Those of mankind that are predestinated unto life, God, before the foundation of the word was laid, according to his eternal and immutable purpose, and the secret counsel and good pleasure of His will, hath chosen in Christ unto everlasting glory, out of his mere free grace and love, without any foresight of faith or good works, or perseverance in either of them, or anything in the creature, as conditions, or causes moving him thereunto; and all to the praise of his glorious grace."

This statement of the doctrine was framed by the Westminster divines in 1645, but it is just the well-articulated creedal expression of the doctrine held by the early Reformers, conserved in the Reformed Church, and attacked by the Arminians. The import of the first section quoted is just this: that the whole sweep of universal history from the beginning to the end, in all its extent and minutest detail, is embraced in the plan and decree of God, that all that comes to pass, great or small, good or bad, God from eternity immutably determined would come to pass.

It is not, however, in connection with the all-comprehensive decree of God that the conflict with the Arminian in the first instance is joined. It is as this decree comes to bear upon the destinies of rational beings and more particularly upon the destinies of men, in other words, as the decree becomes operative in the predestination to life of some of mankind and the foreordination to death of others. But the doctrine of the general decree bears directly upon the question of the destinies of men. If God freely and unchangeably ordains whatsoever comes to pass, and if it comes to pass that some men are saved and some perish, then surely He has freely and unchangeably ordained these facts as well as others. If the Arminian denies the latter he must also deny the former.

Predestination to life and foreordination to death mean substantially that from all eternity God sovereignly, according to the counsel of His will, chose or elected a definite number of the human race to everlasting life, that He elected them as individuals, and that in making this election He was not conditioned by His foresight of faith or good works or perseverance in both, but that the election was determined by that sovereign good pleasure which finds its whole ground and explanation in Himself and in nothing else. In other words, God by an absolute, unconditional, and unchangeable decree determined the salvation of certain persons out of free grace and love, and that in accordance with that decree He executes the purpose of His grace and love. The others not elected, by the exercise of the same sovereign good pleasure He decreed to pass by and ordain to everlasting destruction as the reward of their sins.

It is this doctrine Arminianism denies. In the words of James Arminius, "God has not absolutely predestinated any men to salvation; but that he has in his decree considered them as believers." It is peculiarly important that this fact should be appreciated. The fundamental principle of Arminianism on this article of faith is denial of the doctrine set forth in Reformed Standards. Too often the significance and seriousness of this is obscured by appeal on the part of Arminians to the positive side of their teaching. We must not allow this obscuration. Arminianism starts with negation, the denial of the doctrine of sovereign unconditional election. However much truth the more positive elaboration of the Arminian position may embody, it in no way ceases to be Arminian as long as the denial of unconditional election remains, for this is the crux of the question. Everyone who denies unconditional election denies an aspect of truth that is of the essence of Reformed doctrine.

The Arminian position involves, as we have already hinted, more than negation. The Remonstrance reads thus: "Article I. That God, by an eternal unchangeable purpose in Jesus Christ His Son, before the foundation of the world, hath determined out of the fallen, sinful race of men, to save in Christ, for Christ's sake, those who, through the grace of the Holy Ghost, shall believe on this his Son Jesus, and shall persevere in this faith and obedience of faith, through his grace, even to the end."

On superficial examination it might appear that there is no essential difference between this and the position set forth in the Reformed Standards. Does it not speak of an eternal and unchangeable purpose of God by which He determines to save all who believe on His Son and persevere to the end? It certainly does this, and no one in this controversy will deny that what is said is as such true. God does eternally and unchangeably determine to save all who believe and persevere in holiness to the end. But there is a chasm of difference between what the Arminian here affirms and what the Calvinist affirms.

The difference is just this. The Calvinist affirms that God eternally and unchangeably decrees the salvation of certain persons whom He sovereignly distinguishes by this decree from those who are not appointed to salvation. In pursuance of this decree of salvation He decrees the ends towards its accomplishment, and so decrees to give faith and perseverance to all those predestined to salvation. The Arminian denies any such decree bearing upon the salvation of individuals, and what he affirms in its place is that God decrees or purposes to save all who believe and persevere in faith and obedience to the end. In the former case there is the eternal destination to salvation of persons who are the objects of God's sovereign election; in the latter case there is the divine purpose to save the class characterized by faith and perseverance. In the ultimate analysis the former is the election of persons, the latter is the election of qualities with the provision that all who exhibit these qualities will be saved.

Some Arminians under the stress of the argument, and also on exegetical grounds, perceive the inadequacy of the foregoing position, and so they say that God not only decrees to save all who believe, but that He also elects all who believe. There is therefore, they say, an eternal unchangeable election of individuals whose number is certain, an election indeed of all who are to be ultimately saved. Some may be disposed to say that this is exactly the teaching of the Reformed Standards. A little investigation will expose the fallacy of this.

The hallmark of Calvinism is unconditional election and that is exactly what this highest type of Arminianism vigorously denies. It professes indeed fixed and unchangeable election of individuals. But what is meant is, that, since God decrees to save all who believe and since He knows perfectly beforehand and from eternity who will believe, He on the basis of that foresight as ground and cause elects these individuals to eternal life. God elects all whom He foresees will believe and persevere to the end. His election then is determined by His foresight of some difference that comes to exist among men, a difference which He Himself does not cause but which in the final analysis is due to sovereign choice on the part of the human will. The determining factor in this type of election then is not the sovereign unconditioned good pleasure of God but the decision of the human will which God from eternity foresees. Election is not the source of faith, but faith foreseen is made the source or condition of election.

On close examination it should be evident that this is not divine election at all. The sovereign determination of God is ruled out at the vital point, for the ultimate determinant of the discrimination that exists among men is made to be something in men and not the sovereign good pleasure of God. Indeed this type of Arminianism that at first appears to approach so closely to the Reformed position only serves to show more clearly the total difference between the two systems. The election taught in the Reformed Church is election to salvation and eternal life and therefore also to faith and all other graces as the means ordained of God to the accomplishment of His sovereign decree. Election is not then conditioned upon faith, but faith is the fruit of election. God sovereignly works faith in men because He has in His eternal counsel appointed them to salvation. Faith is not the logical prius of election, but election is the eternal prius and source of faith. Arminianism at its best denies all of these propositions.

The denial of unconditional election strikes at the heart of the doctrine of the grace of God. The grace of God is absolutely sovereign and every failure to recognize and appreciate the absolute sovereignty of God in His saving grace is an expression of the pride of the human heart. It rests upon the demand that God can deal differently with men in the matter of salvation only because they have made themselves to differ. In its ultimate elements it means that the determining factor in salvation is what man himself does, and that is just tantamount to saying that it is not God who determines the salvation of men, but men determine their own salvation; it is not God who saves but man saves himself. This is precisely the issue.

Limited Atonement

The second article of the Arminian Remonstrance of 1610 concerned the question of the extent of the atonement. It reads as follows: "Article II. That, agreeably thereto, Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, died for all men and for every man, so that he has obtained for them all, by his death on the cross, redemption and the forgiveness of sins; yet that no one actually enjoys this forgiveness of sins except the believer, according to the word of the Gospel of John 3:16. . . . . And in the First Epistle of John 2:2 . . ." This is an emphatic statement of what is known as the doctrine of universal atonement, and is in its essence that Christ died for all men alike and procured for them equally and without distinction redemption and forgiveness of sins. The atonement as such, it says in effect, has as its intention the provision of salvation for all, the making of the salvation of all men possible, the placing of all men and every man in a salvable state or condition.

In opposition to this the Reformed Faith affirms the doctrine of what is known as limited atonement. What does it mean? Perhaps the best answer that can be given to this question is to set forth the teaching of the Westminster Confession of Faith, chapter VIII, section V.

Redemption Purchased for the Elect

"The Lord Jesus, by his perfect obedience and sacrifice of himself, which he through the eternal Spirit once offered up unto God, hath fully satisfied the justice of his Father; and purchased not only reconciliation, but an everlasting inheritance in the kingdom of heaven, for all those whom the Father hath given unto him." This definitely states that reconciliation and an everlasting inheritance in the kingdom of heaven is purchased for all those given to the Son by the Father. Who are they? In section 1 of this same chapter we are told that they are the people given to Christ from all eternity to be His seed and "to be by him in time redeemed, called, justified, sanctified, and glorified." The people given to Christ are surely the same as the people chosen in Christ - the form of expression used in chapter III, section v - and they are simply those of mankind predestinated unto life, namely, the elect. With respect to them the Confession continues: "As God hath appointed the elect unto glory, so hath he, by the eternal and most free purpose of his will, foreordained all the means thereunto. Wherefore they who are elected being fallen in Adam, are redeemed by Christ; are effectually called unto faith in Christ by his Spirit working in due season; are justified, adopted, sanctified, and kept by his power through faith unto salvation." (III.vi.) It is for the elect, therefore, for the predestinated to life, for those given to Christ by the Father, for those chosen in Christ unto everlasting glory, that reconciliation and an eternal inheritance in the kingdom of heaven is purchased. It is they who are redeemed by Christ. Thus teaches the Confession, and so the difference has already become apparent.

Purchase and Application Co-extensive

"To all those for whom Christ hath purchased redemption, he doth certainly and effectually apply and communicate the same." (VIII.viii.) The import of this cannot be controverted. It is that the extent of the purchase of redemption is exactly the same as the extent of actual salvation. If Christ purchased redemption for all, then all will have that applied and communicated to them. If only a certain number of the human race are ultimately saved, then only for that number did Christ purchase redemption.

So explicit is the above statement that it needs no confirmation. But in order to show that this is not a random statement but a determining principle of the Confessional teaching it can be shown by an entirely distinct line of argument. "Christ by his obedience and death did fully discharge the debt of all those that are thus justified, and did make a proper, real, and full satisfaction to his Father's justice in their behalf." (XI.iii.) Those for whom Christ discharged the debt and made satisfaction to justice are then the justified. But all who are justified are also effectually called. "Those whom God effectually calleth, he also freely justifieth." (XI.i.) And effectual calling expounded in chapter X refers us back to predestination. "All those whom God hath predestinated unto life, and those only, he is pleased, in his appointed and accepted time, effectually to call, by his word and Spirit, out of that state of sin and death in which they are by nature, to grace and salvation by Jesus Christ." (X.i.) And again: "God did from all eternity decree to justify all the elect; and Christ did, in the fullness of time, die for their sins, and rise again for their justification." (XI.iv.) The upshot is plain - predestination to life, redemption, effectually calling, and justification have identical extent; they have in their embrace exactly the same persons.

The Exclusiveness of Redemption

That the non-elect, those who do not become the actual partakers of salvation and are therefore finally lost, are not included within the scope of the redemption purchased by Christ, we may and must even from that which we have already quoted infer to be the teaching of the Confession. But it is interesting to observe that not only does the Confession imply this; it also expressly states it. "Neither are any other redeemed by Christ, effectually called, justified, adopted, sanctified, and saved, but the elect only." (III.vi.) The Confession is using the phrases "redeemed by Christ" and "purchased redemption" synonymously. Here it is said that redemption by Christ or the purchase of redemption is for those who as a matter of fact are saved and for those only. It is exclusive of those who are not called, justified, adopted, sanctified, and saved. Redemption is defined not only extensively but exclusively.

If we may recapitulate then, the teaching of the Confession can be summed up in these three propositions. (1) Redemption is purchased for the elect. (2) Redemption is applied to all for whom it is purchased. (3) Redemption is not purchased for those who finally perish, for the non-elect.

Atonement is defined therefore in the Confession in terms of sacrifice, reconciliation, redemption, satisfaction to divine justice, discharge of debt, and states clearly that atonement thus defined is for those whom God hath predestinated to life, namely the elect. They are saved because Christ by his redemptive work secured their salvation. The finally lost are not within the embrace of that salvation secured, and therefore they are not within the embrace of that salvation secured, and therefore they are not within the embrace of that which secures it, namely the redemption wrought by Christ. It is just here that the difference between Arminianism and Calvinism may be most plainly stated. Did Christ die and offer Himself a sacrifice to God to make the salvation of all men possible, or did He offer Himself a sacrifice to God to secure infallibly the salvation of His people? Arminians profess the former and deny the latter; our Standards in accordance, as we believe, with Holy Scripture teach the latter.

Objections Answered

The term "limited" atonement has given much offense. It may not indeed be the most fortunate terminology. It is capable of misunderstanding and misrepresentation. Some for this reason may prefer the terms "definite" or "particular" atonement. But what we are particularly insistent upon defending is that which the term historically used connotes, and so if the disuse of the term "limited" is calculated to create the impression that we have renounced the doctrine of which the term is the symbol, if in other words the disuse is calculated to placate the enemies of our Reformed Faith, then we must resolutely refuse to refrain from its use. The atonement is limited, because in its precise intention and meaning and effect it is for those and for those only who are destined in the determinate purpose of God to eternal salvation. We may well bless God that this is not a meager company, but a multitude whom no man can number out of every nation and kindred and people and tongue.

Let it not be thought that the Arminian by his doctrine escapes limited atonement. The truth is that he professes a despicable doctrine of limited atonement. He professes an atonement that is tragically limited in its efficacy and power, an atonement that does not secure the salvation of any. He indeed eliminates from the atonement that which makes it supremely precious to the Christian heart. In B. B. Warfield's words, "the substance of the atonement is evaporated, that it may be given a universal reference." (The Plan of Salvation, p. 122.) What we mean is, that unless we resort to the position of universal restoration for all mankind - a position against which the witness of Scripture is decisive - an interpretation of the atonement in universal terms must nullify its properly substitutive and redemptive character. We must take our choice between a limited extent and a limited efficacy, or rather between a limited atonement and an atonement without efficacy. It either infallibly saves the elect or it actually saves none.

It is sometimes objected that the doctrine of limited atonement makes the preaching of a full and free salvation impossible. This is wholly untrue. The salvation accomplished by the death of Christ is infinitely sufficient and universally suitable, and it may be said that its infinite sufficiency and perfect suitability grounds a bona fide offer of salvation to all without distinction. The doctrine of limited atonement any more than the doctrine of sovereign election does not raise a fence around the offer of the gospel. The overture of the gospel offering peace and salvation through Jesus Christ is to all without distinction, though it is truly from the heart of sovereign election and limited atonement that this stream of grace universally proffered flows. If we may change the figure, it is upon the crest of the wave of divine sovereignty and of limited atonement that the full and free offer of the gospel breaks upon our shores. The offer of salvation to all is bona fide. All that is proclaimed is absolutely true. Every sinner believing will infallibly be saved, for the veracity and purpose of God cannot be violated.

The criticism that the doctrine of limited atonement prevents the free offer of the gospel rests upon a profound misapprehension as to what the warrant for preaching the gospel and even of the primary act of faith itself really is. This warrant is not that Christ died for all men but the universal invitation, demand and promise of the gospel united with the perfect sufficiency and suitability of Christ as Savior and Redeemer. What the ambassador of the gospel demands in Christ's name is that the lost and helpless sinner commit himself to that all-sufficient Savior with the plea that in thus receiving and resting upon Christ alone for salvation he will certainly be saved. And what the lost sinner does on the basis of the warrant of faith is to commit himself to that Savior with the assurance that as he thus trusts he will be saved. What he believes, then, in the first instance is not that he has been saved, but that believing in Christ salvation becomes his. The conviction that Christ died for him, or in other words, that he is an object of God's redeeming love in Christ, is not the primary act of faith. It is often in the consciousness of the believer so closely bound up with the primary act of faith that he may not be able to be conscious of the logical and psychological distinction. But nevertheless the primary act of faith is self-committal to the all-sufficient and suitable Savior, and the only warrant for that trust is the indiscriminate, full and free offer of grace and salvation in Christ Jesus.

Total Depravity

The third of the five points of Arminianism concerns the question of original sin or human depravity. In several of the formal statements of the Arminian position as it bears upon human depravity, the real import of that position is not readily detected. As William Cunningham points out, the controversy when it arose, especially as it was conducted on the Arminian side, did not give the prominence to this aspect of the debate. Yet, as he proceeds to show, "it really lies at the root of the whole difference, as was made more palpably manifest in the progress of the discussion, when the followers of Arminius developed their views upon this subject more fully, and deviated further and further from the doctrine of the Bible and the Reformation on the subject of the natural state and character of men." (Historical Theology, 2:392.)

Arminians do in general terms assert the depravity of fallen human nature. But a merely general statement of the fact does not touch the heart of the question. The real question is the seriousness with which the general statement of the fact is taken and the willingness there is to appreciate all the implications of it. In a word, it is the question of the totality or entirety of this corruption.

Our Confession of Faith says with respect to our first parents and their sin in eating the forbidden fruit: "By this sin they fell from their original righteousness, and communion with God, and so became dead in sin, and wholly defiled in all the faculties and parts of soul and body.

"They being the root of all mankind, the guilt of this sin was imputed, and the same death in sin and corrupted nature conveyed, to all their posterity, descending from them by ordinary generation.

"From this original corruption, whereby we are utterly indisposed, disabled, and made opposite to all good, and wholly inclined to all evil, do proceed all actual transgressions." (VI.2-4.)

"Man, by his fall into a state of sin, hath wholly lost all ability of will to any spiritual good accompanying salvation; so as a natural man, being altogether averse from that good, and dead in sin, is not able, by his own strength, to convert himself, or to prepare himself thereunto." (IX.3.)

These are highly compressed and succinct statements of total depravity, and their meaning and consequences ought to be carefully weighed. They are peculiarly offensive to every view that hangs on to any vestige of optimism with respect to the qualities or potencies inherent in human nature as fallen. Indeed they must arouse the opposition and emphatic protest of every view that suspends any hope on the autonomy of the human will. It is just because the Arminian does in the last analysis place the determining factor in the individual's salvation in the free choice of the human will, that he has taken such unrelenting issue with the doctrine of the Reformed Churches.

The Confession does not, of course, deny to men what we may call natural virtue or civil righteousness. It affirms that works done by unregenerate men may, as regards the matter of them, be things which God commands, and of good use both to themselves and others. Neither does it say that all men are equally depraved, or to put it more accurately it does not say that this corruption "whereby we are utterly indisposed, disabled, and made opposite to all good, and wholly inclined to all evil" receives the same degree of development and expression in all. What the Confession does is to set forth the teaching of Scripture with respect to the moral and spiritual condition of men as they stand in the pure light of the divine standard and judgment. Judged by that norm they are dead in sin and wholly defiled.

Irresistible Grace

As is apparent from the foregoing discussion it is in connection with the operations of God in His saving grace that the implications of the affirmation or denial of the doctrine of total depravity come to light. The question here is: What is the mode of the divine operation of the Spirit of God in bringing men to faith and repentance? All are agreed that men are saved through faith. But the difference arises when we come to explain the fact that, of those who indiscriminately receive the overtures of grace in the gospel, some believe and some do not. The question is not in general terms that of grace. Arminians concede that men cannot be saved apart from the gracious operations of the Spirit of God in the heart. The question is: What is the nature of that grace? What is the cause of faith? Why is it that some believe to the saving of their souls and some do not? Is that grace of God given to all indiscriminately, or is it a grace given only to those who believe? Is it a grace that may be resisted, or is it always efficacious to the end in view, and therefore incapable of being frustrated?

Arminians though exhibiting certain differences among themselves are agreed that sufficient grace, whether it be regarded as a natural possession or a gracious bestowal, resides in all, and therefore that all men have the ability to believe. The explanation of the fact that some believe and some do not rests wholly in a difference of response on the part of men. This difference of response may be stated in terms of co-operation with, or improvement of, the grace of God. But in any case the explanation of the difference lies exclusively in the free will of man. For the difference of response on the part of the believer as over against the unbeliever he is not only wholly responsible but he, in the exercise of the autonomy that belongs to his will, is the sole determining factor. God does not make men to differ. He operates no more savingly and efficaciously in the man who believes than He does in the man who does not believe. For this indiscriminateness in the saving operations of God, the Arminian is exceedingly jealous; he demands that what God does for and in one He does for and in all equally. In the ultimate, then, the issue of salvation rests with the sovereign determination of the human will. Men make themselves to differ.

Now it is easy to see that , if man is thus able to co-operate with or improve the grace that is common to all, there must remain in man some vestige of good. Indeed, so decisive an element of ability to good survives that it determines the exercise of the most important event or series of events in the history of the individual. And this is exactly where the Arminian position impinges not only upon the sovereignty and efficacy of God's saving grace but upon the total depravity of sinful man.

In magnificent contrast with this denial of the sovereignty and efficacy of the saving grace of God is the teaching of our Confession. It reads: "All those whom God hath predestined unto life, and those only, he is pleased, in his appointed and accepted time, effectually to call, by his word and Spirit, out of that state of sin and death in which they are by nature, to grace and salvation by Jesus Christ; enlightening their minds spiritually and savingly to understand the things of God; taking away their heart of stone, and giving unto them an heart of flesh; renewing their wills, and by his almighty power determining them to that which is good; and effectually drawing them to Jesus Christ; yet so as they come most freely, being made willing by his grace.

"This effectual call is of God's free and special grace alone, not from anything at all foreseen in man; who is altogether passive therein, until, being quickened and renewed by the Holy Spirit, he is thereby enabled to answer this call, and to embrace the grace offered and conveyed in it." (X.1-2.)

In these sections the faith that embraces Jesus Christ to the saving of the soul is referred to the sovereign predestination of God as its source, and to the regenerative operation of God in the heart as its cause. God is sovereignly pleased to impart His efficacious grace, and it is the enablement that comes from this sovereign bestowal of the grace of the Holy Spirit that leads to faith. The person effectually called is altogether passive therein until renewed by the Holy Spirit. A new heart has been given him and a right spirit created within him by the mysterious work of the Holy Spirit; and because he has a new heart and a right spirit his response to the call of the gospel cannot but be one of loving reception and trust. Just as the reaction of the carnal mind cannot but be one of enmity against God, so the reaction of the mind of the Spirit cannot but be one of faith and trust. It is the very nature of the new heart to trust God as He is revealed in the face of Jesus Christ.

We have here in our Confession a rather neat statement of the relation of faith to regeneration. In this realm of theological debate our position can very readily be tested by our answer to the questions: Does God regenerate us because we believe, or do we believe because God has regenerated us? In other words what has the causal priority, regeneration or faith? There are many evangelicals who will say that faith is the means of regeneration, that God regenerates those who believe and because they believe. They thereby, whether wittingly or unwittingly, place themselves in the Arminian camp and in the most decided opposition to Reformed doctrine. Logically they place themselves - perhaps with good intentions - in a position that leads to the wreck and ruin of true evangelicalism.

We are, of course, using the term "regeneration" in the restricted sense of the new birth, and in this sense the very hallmark of Calvinism as of Augustinianism is that faith is the gift of God, because it proceeds from the regenerative operation of the Holy Spirit as its only cause and explanation. God has elected His people to salvation. He has ordained that this salvation become theirs through faith. But because of the total depravity of their hearts and minds they cannot exercise faith; they are dead in trespasses and sins. In order to bring them to faith God implants by the agency of the Holy Spirit a new heart and a right spirit within them, and thus effectually and irresistibly draws them to Christ. They are made willing in the day of God's power. By grace they have been saved through faith, and that not of themselves, it is the gift of God.

The Perseverance of the Saints

In the closest relation to the foregoing doctrine of efficacious or irresistible grace is the doctrine of the eternal security of the believer. This doctrine the Arminian bluntly rejects. A true believer, he says, may be in grace and then fall from grace and finally perish. Such a position is in logical coherence with his doctrine of the nature of saving grace. If the determining factor in the matter of an individual's salvation is the autonomy of his own free will, then consistency would seem to be all in favor of regarding salvation as a very insecure and mutable possession. Salvation in this case cannot be any more stable than that which in the final analysis determines it.

But it is just here that the harmony of efficacious grace with the perseverance of the saints comes to light. The Reformed Faith recognizes that God it is who determines a sinner's salvation, and that what He begins He brings to perfection. Salvation rests upon the unchangeable grace of God. He will not forsake the work of His hands, nor make void His covenant. Thus reads the Confession: "They whom God hath accepted in his Beloved, effectually called and sanctified by His Spirit, can neither totally nor finally fall away from the state of grace; but shall certainly persevere therein to the end, and be eternally saved.

"This perseverance of the saints depends not upon their own free will, but upon the immutability of the decree of election, flowing from the free and unchangeable love of God the Father; upon the efficacy of the merit and intercession of Jesus Christ; the abiding of the Spirit, and of the seed of God within them; and the nature of the covenant of grace: from all which ariseth also the certainty and infallibility thereof." (XVII.1-2.)

Misalnya,

[1] Desdemona mengambil sebuah kursi, lalu mendudukinya.

Parafrase:

A poem should not mean but be.”

PENERIMAAN

Kalau kau mau kuterima kau kembali
Dengan sepenuh hati

Aku masih tetap sendiri

Kutahu kau bukan yang dulu lagi
Bak kembang sari sudah terbagi

Jangan tunduk! Tentang aku dengan berani

Kalau kau mau kuterima kau kembali
Untukku sendiri tapi

[1] Desdemona mengambil sebuah kursi, lalu mendudukinya.
[1d] Desdemona mengambil sebuah bangku, lalu mendudukinya.
[1e] Desdemona mengambil sebuah kursi, kemudian mendudukinya.

“Style is a property of all texts.” tulis Leech [2].

(Yoh. 14:7)
“Barangsiapa telah melihat Aku, ia telah melihat Bapa.” (Yoh. 14:9)
“Ia adalah gambar Allah yang tidak kelihatan.” (Kol. 1:15)
“The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being.” (Ibr. 1:3) [3]
“Yesus . . . penuh dengan Roh Kudus.” (Luk. 4:1)

On a human level, we may say that the relation between human thought and human word is analogical to the relation between the Father and the Word” [4].

Seperti ingin bunuh diri, Monsera menantang teriknya Matahari tanpa berbekal setetes pun air dan menantang dinginnya malam tanpa berbekal selembar pun selimut.

To Him be the glory! Amin.

Theology and Technology

By Rahmadi Trimananda

Introduction

Once upon a time, men and women lived in a so called traditional way. There was no electricity, no lamps, and even no machines. Was there anything wrong? No, there was not. It was just a period of time, when everyone could live peacefully and happily without having to think about the contacts they might have in their hand-phones, the appointments they made by using their PDAs. They even did not think about buying fuels for their cars as it is in the mind of today’s modern people who are troubled by the steep rising of the world’s fuel price. The world was so peaceful and calm at that time.

Suddenly, the industrial revolution came into human’s civilization at the end of 18th century and early 19th century. It caused major changes in agriculture, manufacturing, and transportation, which then give great impact on social, economics, and cultural conditions in Britain [1]. Machines, as the embryo of automatic devices, were rising at that time, giving so much new flavors to human’s life. The train and steam boat were invented in the mean time, as the trend went further until the late 19th century.

The freedom of thinking, which has appeared 2 centuries before, was one of the causes for this rapid changing. Human had put God aside from the center of life since the Renaissance movement rose in Europe. What happened? God, through the Christendom, was “reigning” over the land before the free thinking period came. People were not brave enough to say what they thought about everything they had and experienced in life, and even about the religion itself. However, the enlightenment had changed everything once and forever. Since then, men thought that they got a new source of energy to explore the legacy of this world. Wow, isn’t it too fast to conclude? The church, accused as the cause of the imprisonment of human’s thought, was finally left by the followers. Together, those people tried to discover their own ways of life. I cannot even believe that such thing could have happened in the history of the civilization.

Industrial revolution, French revolution, and American revolution are probably the most important events that contribute to the modern technology and the modern way of life. Within one hundred years, the industrial revolution had been able to bring the world society to enter the new chapter, so called the modern era. New things were invented and people thought that they solved the major problems, but they actually did not. In fact, the two worst wars were happening at the modern period of the early 20th century. As God had been put aside, science (human’s thought) and technology emerged as the new religion.

The philosophy of technology and theology

Now we get into the real complication, because technology actually creates more problems rather than solves the initial problems. In the mean time, theology has been being left behind. Is there any way out of here? It is an irony, because the effort to summon a better condition for life has been showing its inherent flaws. At the same time, again, it has already been too far for the thoughts to get back to God.

Since the invention of the computer in the middle of 20th century, humans have started thinking once again, that they got a super antidote for all problems in life. Within only 30 to 40 years, computers could develop so rapidly that they penetrated almost every aspect of human’s life. It has been developing even outrageously within the past 20 years, dating back to 1990s. Nowadays, technology is very identical to a computer based system. One may not admit so, but it is irrefutable that we have computers in almost every single entity that we see and have today. It is amazing, isn’t it?

In the middle of this great advancement, it is a big irony that men deny their religious nature. As we have agreed before, people tried to change God with science and technology. This has made human’s life become emptier. Slow but sure, life loses its meaning. The advances we saw and still see in science and technology cannot bring the real meaning back. So, what should we then do? How should we then consider the positions of God and technology in the modern life? It is of course not without any reasons that God allowed the modern era came to our lives.

The jazz corner

I was once in a festival in my neighborhood and I saw a guitar superhero, namely I Wayan Balawan. This guy could really shred the guitar’s neck until the last piece. There are only two words suitable for this guy: remarkably unbelievable. He is an Indonesian guitarist and for me he is a pure Indonesian-ist. He plays western Jazz music, but he does not make his music like the western people make it. He chose his own style of playing and he uses Jazz music as his media to bring his ideas and to express it everywhere.

One of his outstanding compositions is called Country Beleganjur. From its name, of course, we can guess that the music would sound somewhat western, as it bears “country” for its first name. The basic structure is country music. However, he reorganizes everything to make it become a Jazz-Country style. Even more, he goes further and puts his own ideas there. He puts the Balinese percussion and musical instrument on top of this Jazz-Country music. It is simply intended to introduce the Balinese local music to the Jazz and western music fans, especially for those coming from Europe. He plays the composition very gracefully and charmingly. Every single eye would stare at his fast-dancing fingers while he was playing. He does not reduce the measure of the Jazziness, yet he is able to put the deepest essence of the traditional Balinese content in it.

Unlike other good guitarists, Balawan plays a completely different set of ideas and standard although all of them play the same instrument, electric guitar. Most of the electric guitarists play pure western flavored compositions, while Balawan could create a good mixture to deliver the traditionalism on top of modernism.

Up to here, it might be clearer that I want to compare this example to the Christian life. Moving back to our discussion about technology and theology, we can see that the positions of these two entities are like the music that Balawan has created. Theology is the foundation of technology, and yet it is the content of the deliverance of technology. Technology is a tool to reveal God’s glory even more and to reveal technology, to get acquainted to God’s will, we should put theology as the basic foundation of belief. But, what does the bible say about this? Let’s continue the discussion further. Hold on.

Theology and Technology

What now? The bible in one of its parts about knowledge, Psalm 1:7, says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. It completely goes side by side with what we have discussed about before. Technology is the tool, not the content. Theology is the foundation, the content, and it is also the sword that should be used to justify technology. In Genesis 1 and 2, God gave the order to human to preserve this world. Technology is the most relevant mean to be used, in order to preserve this world in today’s modern life. However, the task is not up to preserving this world, because technology itself has been contaminated by the nature of sin. Its position is now should be brought back into God’s divine plan.

The question to think about is how we apply this positioning in the real world, in everyday’s life, in our daily activities, whether we are special agents of technology or not. I myself am a still-in-process engineer. I know what engineering is, but I have to struggle more to find the meaning and the position of my specific field of engineering in God’s eternal plan. One thing that I know, theology should be the foundation of all. My engineering knowledge should be established on top of it and should be redeemed according to God’s word, and should be used for preserving this world. As my field is computer engineering, for instance, I have to find a way to make the computers in such a way that they can be used to glorify God. It indeed does not give the influence deliberately like a sermon from the pulpit. A good computer installation can make the computer network in a Christian foundation work well, and thus it will result in a strong computer and database management system that may help the social workers organizing their activities better. At the end, it will affect thousands of people and even more. It is exactly as what Martin Luther have said about calling. No matter what kind of job we are responsible for, we have to do it as good as we can, because we serve God in everything we have and we do. Even more, we should think further to use technology as a mean to spread the gospel to as many people as possible. Therefore, we can end this discussion in the following sentence: we should struggle to redeem the technology according to God’s word, we develop technology in order to fulfill God’s command to preserve this world, and we use technology in such a way as a vehicle to introduce God to many people. Is this enough? It might never be enough. Now, it is your turn to also think about it. Do you dare to take this challenge?

The Transforming Vision

The Transforming Vision: Shaping a Christian World View
By Brian J. Walsh & J. Richard Middleton
Downers Grove: IVP, 1984
Book Review by Jadi S. Lima, yadislima.blogspot.com

“This book, then, is a passionate call to Christians to be of one heart and mind, and acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord in all of life.” Thus said Mr. Wolterstorff in the foreword of this book. Back then in 1998 when the first time I read this book, its call coming out loud. It came to me that a journey to understand Christian Worldview is not a mere intellectual fascination. Indeed, worldviews are not systems of thought, like theologies or philosophies – they are perceptual frameworks (p. 17) that direct all areas of human life. I found it as a bridge between general theories and particular everyday living. The author structured the book in four parts: What are worldviews (ch. 1-2), The Biblical Worldview (ch. 3-4), The (Biblical Analysis) of Modern Worldview (ch. 6-9), and The Biblical Worldview in Action (ch. 10-12).

What are Worldviews?

The analysis begun with case study of concrete practices in everyday life of a young Singaporean bachelor, child-rearing practices in Japan and Canada, and the contrasts of the view concerning land held by North America’s dominant culture and its native Indian culture. The authors tried to show what is worldview and how does it direct our lives by showing that worldviews are more than systems reducible to theoretical description (p. 29). A worldview is more than a mere abstraction.

The authors used Mr. Olthuis’ distinction (actually coming from Cliford Greetz) between worldview as a vision of life, and also always a vison for life. Worldview as ‘what is’ and ‘what ought’. It determines how do we see the world, distinguish what is valuables from what is not – and as a consequence: what is worth doing and what is not. In short, it provides a model of the world which guides its adherents in the world (p. 32).

Worldviews are founded on ultimate faith commitments, that is, the way we answer four basic questions facing everyone (p. 35):

1. Who am I?
2. Where am I?
3. What’s wrong?
4. What’s the remedy?

The answers of these questions lie deep in our religious core (ie: heart). Sometimes it is explicitly realized, but most of the times it is subconsciously held (p.35). Our ultimate faith commitment as confessing-believing creature shapes the contour of our worldview. So, doubts and skepticism that bring faith-crisis will eventually shakes our being and living in the world. Angst will remove the ground from our feet. Worldview is not philosophical or theological system, but it is the foundational to such a system (although never exhausted in it) (p.35).

In this book Brian Walsh and Richard Middleton also supply us with criteria to judge and choose between different and conflicting worldview. Those are (p. 37-39):

1. Reality: Does the worldview accomplish what a worldview ought to accomplish? Does it elucidate all of life or just open up (or even overemphasize) some aspects of life while ignoring others? Since God created the whole reality as a coherent meaning, a worldview that does not integrate and elucidate God’s creation as it really is cannot lead to an integral and whole way of life.
2. Love and Justice: Does the worldview sensitizes or desensitizes us to issues of love and justice? Does it ever challenge evil in our life?
3. Internal coherence: Does it internally coherent or just some self-contradicting fragments brought together?
4. Openness: Does this view bring life or death, blessing or curse? Open life or closing it down? (Deut 30:15-20). And implicitly, does it recognize its own limitations and open to learn from other visions of life? A good worldview is not ideology.

For Christians, the ultimate criterion by which we judge our worldview is the Bible. Our worldview, faith confession, and theories must be judged and guided by the Scripture. That is the reason why this book tries to construct a biblical worldview as the pathway for our walk with God (p. 39).

The Biblical Worldview

Basically, Walsh-Middleton structured the presentation in this part according to biblical Creation-Fall-Redemption ground-motive.

Creation

There will be huge difference in our way to see and shape the world once we take seriously the biblical proclamation, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” The Christian worldview doesn’t properly begin with Christ and salvation (soteriological issue), but with God and creation. We can’t make sense of salvation, redemption, and reconciliation (‘what’s the remedy’) without first have an idea about ‘what is sin?’ (‘what’s wrong’). And we can’t really understand what sin destroyed, depraved, or distort without having the right idea about what good was it in the beginning (‘where am I? and who am I?’), ie: the biblical view on creation (p. 43-44). God created this world by His word (Gen 1-2, Ps 33:6-9) and by His wisdom (Prov 8). The first metaphor indicates God’s mighty power and sovereign will, while the second indicates the brilliance of His plan and design (p.46-47). The Bible never discussed creation in an abstract, speculative manner, but with a sense of awe before the Lord’s amazing power and glory. The tone here is worship. So, the story of creation is not an industrial report of ‘design planning and mass-production’ of the universe. “Creation is essentially constituted as a response to the laws of God,” said Walsh-Middleton (p.49-50). In the contrary to Deism, biblical drama of providence pictures God as a faithful King who keep His promise with His creation to sustain their existence. God’s covenant bonding is not limited to His people only, but extended to the whole creation (p. 50-52). However, human beings is a special kind of creature. Although we are here to serve the King just like the rest of the creature, but like none other, we were made in the image of God. Along history theologians and philosophers alike debating over the meaning of the term, but alas, many interpretations of it have been influenced by non-Christian philosophy (p. 52-53). Walsh-Middleton believe that we are suppose to correlate it to two important biblical notion: 1) our dominion over creation and 2) our religious choice to serve God or idols. Our ‘dominion’ over the earth should not be interpreted as ‘exploiting’ the planet. But, it is to be read as ‘developing and preserving’ the creation. God put us here to ‘cultivate’ the garden. To ‘cultivate’ is to ‘culture’ it, ie: to shape it according to a plan. In other words, to be an imago Dei is to make history. God’s command to develop the creation also means to cultivate human relationships, institutions, art, advertising, and many other things in human life (p. 55). But, the development never meant to be unbridled. We must be a responsible steward over God’s creation.

Fall

Our religious choice to serve God or idols has brought us to the condition we called ‘fall’. We chose idols and reap the consequences. This is our answer to the second worldview question, “What’s wrong?” Although it seldom concerns modern Christians, analysis of the nature of idolatry is essential to our understanding about the fall and imago Dei (p. 62). What is idolatry? Basically it is the usurping of God’s place and ours with idols. Our religious nature will not allow us not to worship. If we are not worshipping God, then we are surely worshipping other things, ie: creation. The consequences is disastrous. Injustice and other evils will follow. Idolatry is also usurping our place. The very word for ‘idols’ in Hebrew is also the word for ‘image’. Idols or image means representation. Even in the ancient world, people didn’t think that an idol to be an actual god. Instead, they believe it as a visible embodiment of their god, representing his/her power and majesty (p. 64). So, we human as imago Dei means, we are to visibly represent God with the totality of our life. Therefore the Neo-Calvinists battle cry, “Life is religion!” The sin of idolatry is not in trying to make God visible (indeed, this is the very task of we humans), but in false worship (wrong object of worship, ie: idols) and false imaging (it is human being itself who have to be the idols/image of God, not any other things) (p. 64-65). We must choose between worshipping God or idols. There is no abstain here. If all aspects of our lives are not an expression of our love for Him,they will express rebellion against Him (p. 69). The fallen condition of the creation means sin is no longer just a created possibility, but it is a present fact. Satan is actively enticing this universe’s inhabitants to treason against their Rightful Ruler (p. 70). As C. S. Lewis said, “Every square inch, every split second, is claimed by God and counterclaimed by Satan.”

Redemption

One day Satan will be defeated, evil will be no more, and the creation will once again flourish with Shalom. Walsh-Middleton made a clear and concise summary of redemptive history by each covenant God gave from the time of Noah to Jesus Christ. In Jesus, God once again redoing the act of creation and reverse the destructive process that going so far as a result of our rebellion against the Creator. Satan was defeated, the war has won by our Messiah, yet the battle is still going on. The imago Dei restored once again by the work of the Spirit. It means as the steward of God’s creation we are to cultivate this world for God’s glory. Every aspect of the creation is renewed. Just as sin has ruined every aspect of creation, the redemption also left nothing untouched by the grace. Walsh-Middleton likened this to electrical circuits. In the analogy, the cables are the structure of creation; while the electron flow is the direction of creation as obeying their Rightful King or disobey Him. I found the metaphor to be very useful to explain the C-F-R plot in the christian worldview as opposed to other, dualistic, pagan/secular worldview. The question is not which area in life is holy (or unholy), but which direction is holy (or unholy). Since the formation of history is keep going, no matter the fall misdirected it, we are now encounter cultural formations. These formations, in most of the case are mixed-bag of good and evil. So, our task as believers are to discern what part of the cultural formations is creatonally good, and which other parts are misdirected, therefore is evil (p. 90).

The (Biblical Analysis) of Modern Worldview

In this part Walsh-Middleton tried to exorcise dualism from the way we see reality. The dualism’s split-view of reality had effectively crippled Christians from shaping the world according to God’s will. As Jim Wallis’ notes, “There is little evidence in the way Christians live to support our claim that the Kingdom of heaven is at hand. Rather, the evidence would suggest that, in most churches, the culture of economic, political, and military systems of United States is at hand. The question must be asked why the churches do not live by their confession.” (p. 94). Walsh-Middleton point to some forms of dualisms, such as sacred/secular, vita activa/vita contemplativa, inner-life/external-life that fragmented our life and therefore limit God’s redemptive activity to small areas of our lives. Other areas are left untouched by the radical transforming power of God’s word. How can this happen?

Walsh-Middleton then analyze Western cultural history to track down every turn that brought this dualism to the way we Christians see the world. Beginning with Plato and Plotinus dualism between form/matter (that manifest in the their dualistic anthropology-spirituality of body/soul opposition) that influence early church fathers as Justn Martyr, Origen, Basil, and finally the great st. Augustine himself (p. 108-112). As the father of Mediaeval culture, Augustine positivize his Platonic dualism in many areas. Notably in the ecclesiastization of the era (p. 110-111). Life, under the influence of Augustine is oriented to the vertical, internal, eternal, spiritual, heavenly, and ascetic. Together with Augustine’s tendency to stress our falleness, this other-worldly ascetism left very litte room for economic, technological, and scientific developments.

The other half of Middle-Ages witness the renaissance of Aristotle in the work of Thomas Aquinas. Unlike Plato and Neo-Platonisms that have a negative view on the material world, Aristotelianism (and its Christian baptizer, Thomas Aquinas) open up rooms for horizontal-natural side of life (p. 112). Unlike Augustine, st. Thomas stressed the goodness of creation rather than the ugliness of its fall. But the problem with Thomism is its ‘double-decker’ view of reality. The redemption (‘grace’) is just ‘added up’ (donum superadditum) at the top of natural creation. Body, material goods, and ‘secular work’ is not viewed as inherently evil, but just ‘not as important as’ the spiritual ones. Although st. Thomas’ dualism is of different type than st. Augustine’s, but it still limit the scope of Christ’s redemption. In this case grace doesn’t make too much difference to natural world. This dualism opened the door to secularism. If Christ has practically nothing to say to our everyday-secular side of life, then those side will open itself to other voices. In this case, the guidance of Aristotle and later to the leads of the secular humanists. In other words, the Christians open itself to the double allegiance. Jesus is the King for our ‘spiritual life’, while Mammon is our Master in the ‘secular areas’ of life. It is Thomas that open the gate to modern-atheistic secularism.

How did Thomistic dualism give a way to modern secularism? It is Pico della Mirandola’s Oration on the Dignity of Man (1487) that retelling the story of creation in different tunes. There, he pictures man as homo autonomous, free to determined his own position and course of actions. From that time being, the mediaeval answer of ‘who am I?’ and ‘where am I?’ had changed forever. Man become god unto himself, and nature become the wild expansive arena for his exploration. The mediaeval dualism of grace vs. nature gave way to modern humankind’s (individual) freedom vs. deterministic nature. History witness a brand new worldview that never been existed before. Two tendencies were listed by Walsh-Middleton: empiricism and mathematical rationalism. The modern worldview has a peculiar way to see empirical world. Unlike the ancient Greeks that derive science from the ‘rational order’ of ideal realm, or the Schoolmen that see goodness of natural world as a pointer to ‘higher realm’ of supernature and God. The way Francis Bacon in his Novum Organum treated man, the natural world, evil, and salvation shows us the difference. Bacon define the fall of men as the fall from innocence and dominion over nature. The ‘what’s wrong?’ question is fragmented into two realms – moral and physical. The earlier is solved by religion and faith, while the latter by arts and sciences (p. 120-121). Bacon’s empirical method will unlock the key to understand natural law and once again gives us power to dominate natural world. Together with Bacon, Descartes’ prepared the foundation of modern Newtonian view of the universe (the mechanistic universe bounded by rigid law of cause-effect).

Walsh-Middleton also clarify the confusion caused by some claims about the influence of Christian’s belief in the founding of modern view of the universe. The logic is quite straight. Since the Christians belief in a rational God who created a rational universe, it is this idea that enabled modernity to have their rationalistic science. The logic is flawed however. It is not exclusively Christian to have an idea of a rational universe. The ancient Egyptians, Mesopotamians, Babylonians, and other Near Easterns have an idea of regular and structured universe. And it is essentially Greek, not Christian, to understand the universe as rationalistic. So who was the main contributor to laid the foundation of modern science? Hooykaas said that the building materials of modern science (logic, math, and the view of a rational cosmos) were coming from the Greeks, while the vitamins for healthy growth came from the biblical concept of creation (p. 127). The positive appreciation of the cosmos definitely did not come from the ancient Greeks or the secular humanists. It actually came from the Reformator’s emphasis on the goodness of the created cosmos and our cultural mandate to develop it.

The modern-secular worldview’s innovation is to free human beings from any dependence to anything above her. For them, humankind themselves is God. Even the Greek view held that man was divine by the virtue of his (educated) reason that participated in (or conformed to) the eternal logos (p. 128). Man, finally is the measure of all things. We are becoming a law upon ourselves (homo autonomous). But, this is a pretended autonomy. Actually, we are hoping, trembling, and fascinated before the unholy trinity of our age: Scientism, technicism, and economism.

Science reveals to us the knowledge of the wild natural world structures. Once the ‘secret’ known, we can easily tame the cosmos. For modern man, ignorance is the original sin and salvation coming from education. “Knowledge is power,” said Bacon. With scientific method the (pretended) Almighty Man get his Omniscience. We must distinguish modern man’s obsesssion with science from his Greeks predecessors. While the Greeks seeks harmony with logos, the modern man seeks control. His obsession is actually to be in control.

Technology brought power at the tips of our fingers. Science embody itself in technology to give omnipotence to the homo autonomous. Machines are the extension of the (false) gods to control the wild, wild world, so we can realize the (false) prophecy of unbounded, unending progress. But, later the machine grew so powerful, until it overwhelmingly control the life of his own masters. It grew so big, his appetite for power dries up our resources very, very quickly.

The third god of modernism is Economism (or, Capitalism). Adam Smith, the father of classical capitalism put his faith on the good (but invisible) hands that regulate the market for the good of all. The lust for profits, once a deadly sin in middle-ages era, now becoming the carrot that lure us to a better tomorrow. Result? A quantum leap in the ‘standard of living’ – but is not (and cannot) for the most of the earth’s populations.

Now, at the end of modernism (this book was written at 1983-1984, prior to the fall of Berlin Wall) people realize that the unholy trinity is ‘running out of gas’. We are headed energy crises, world financial crises, social unrest, war, etc. The modern idols has proved itself inadequate. How can Jesus, through his body brings healing is discussed in the next part.

The Biblical Worldview in Action

In the last three chapters of the book Walsh-Middleton tried to sketch a direction (not a blueprint – see p. 151) for a truly Christian response to cultivate the culture. They stressed that a truly Christian response must be radical and comprehensive. We cannot limit our response to some areas, while naively ignoring others (eg. reject abortions but agree to increasing military expenditures; ‘against’ degradations of morality, but practically silent about the triumph of economism as King in society that often leads to it – see p. 150). This radical re-directing of society means we have to be totally change our way of doing and being. “True cultural renewal is possible only if we abandoned our idols, recognize the multidimensionality of life, respond obediently to God’s norms for our lives and engage communally in cultural renewal,” said Walsh-Middleton (p. 163). Only if we renounce the idols of scientism, technologism, and economism that a cultural renewal can begin (p. 152). We must reject to see life as ‘no more than…’ (reductionism). As a consequence, we must admit that there’s a multi-aspect creational law. We must respect this law in every aspect of life. And we surely cannot do these things alone. The cultural mandate is a communal calling.

One of the most strategic place to subvert the modern-atheistic empire is in the training center of their priest, that is: the universities. In this place, usually many of the (modern) professors are blind to their own religious commitment. Dooyeweerd, Kuhn, Polanyi and some other thinkers open our eyes about this fact. “The question isn’t really one of ‘integrating’ faith and scholarship. Faith and scholarship always are integrated. The question is which faith?” (p. 172). Scholarships are always be done on a set of philosophical framework that itself guided by a pretheoretical worldview. So, to do a genuine Christian scholarship, a truly Christian philosophical framework is required. As Wolterstorff said, “The Bible doesn’t provide us with a body of indubitably known propositions by reference to which we can govern all our acceptance and non-acceptance of theories.” (p. 172) The way from biblical vision of life to a detail of scientific analysis is mediated by a philosophical paradigm. We need to develop such a theoretical framework – one which is sensitive to and rooted in the biblical worldview (p. 173).

“The beginning of a Christian philosophy is the perspective that everything, including humans and their theories, is subject to and exists only in response to God’s creational law (or word).” (p.175-176) To understand this creational law, we must observe the creation. But, there’s a problem with this. First, Since the creation is fallen, we have to discern the effect of the fall from the creational law itself. Second, we must not confuse law/order of the universe with logic (which is just one of the many aspects of reality). To say that our universe is ordered is not the same with saying that our universe is rational/logical. Logic itself is a part of God’s creation and therefore bounded by the creational law. Third, since we the observer is a part of our universe we observe – we must admit the limitation of our horizon of knowing. Dooyeweerd pointed to the problem of explaining reality as homo autonomous observing mechanical-rational universe. Modern dualism of freedom/determinism is haunted by absurdity. When we deify logic, human freedom itself is threatened by the rigidly mechanical conception of reality. As a result, scholars tried to stop the encroachment of determinism by splitting the academy into Geisteswissenschaften and Naturwissenschaften. The earlier is trying to understand humanity through their works, while the later’s goal is to explain natural phenomena by its rigid mechanical laws. Is scientific theory God’s law itself? The answer is no. Scientific theories is a provisional-theoretical approximations of God’s norm. The norm itself must be distinguished from concrete reality. The norm is universal, while the concrete entities are particular. “While God’s law are universal, creation itself bursts with uniqueness and individuality. While God’s law does order creational life, it leaves room, especially in human life for differing responses. God’s law for our cultural life is a calling to which we respond, not a deterministic force.” (p. 178)

The christian philosophy Walsh-Middleton talking about actually is Dooyeweerd’s cosmonomic philosophy that tried to be non-reductive and radical. More about Dooyeweerd later.

Membentuk Wawasan Kristiani

Saya ingin mengajak Saudara melihat bagaimana orang modern berpikir.
Kita hanya mengajarkan bagaimana go to heaven, tetapi kita, sebagai seorang teolog, tidak mengajarkan how the heaven goes?

Oh, jelas berpengaruh!

Saya mempunyai definisi Reformed sebagai a history christianity. Bukan seperti demikian.

The opening mind, berpikir terbuka, berpikir tidak sempit. Tetapi justru dalam buku "The Closing of the American Mind" artinya berbeda. The Openness Means Closing. Apa artinya?

Apakah Yesus Kristus mengajarkannya? Oh, mungkin juga dia katakan demikian, "Tuhan berbicara tadi pagi", benarkah demikian?

Bagaimana Christian Mind dikerjakan di dalam berpikir? Pemecahan mengenai culture dijelaskan dengan pengertian apa? Doctrine of Creation, Doctrin of Sin or Fall. Saudara lihat, tadi yang namanya thinking christianly. Lalu bagaimana menghadapi culture itu? Kita pelajari dari Systematic Theology, bukan? Doctrine of Creation, bagaimana melihat culture? Doctrine of Fall, bagaimana melihat culture? Bagaimana Doctrine of Christ and Redemption melihat culture?

Misalnya, pada waktu Reformasi keluar Marthin Luther dengan the doctrine of Christ. Bukan!

Philosophy of knowledge! Sebenarnya ia sedang berfilsafat tentang filsafat. Kamu belum pernah mati, bukan? Kamu tahu dari mana? Saya mau tanya, begitu kamu mati, kamu pikir enak seperti minum ecstacy? Kamu tahu dari mana?" Dia marah.

Orang mau bunuh diri saja masih begini pintar! Luar biasa!

Ketika semua membuka nomor 57: Malam Kudus, mereka semua langsung tertawa, tetapi terus dinyanyikan. Mulanya kami tertawa, namun terus bernyanyi. Akhirnya semua sepi, lagu menjadi tenang.

Tetapi puji Tuhan, ada the Doctrin of Christ and Redemption.

Thinking Christianly
